Keyword research is important to directing targeted traffic to your website. Some newbie Internet marketers believe that by just creating a website they will automatically receive traffic and make sales. In the past, that may have been the norm. Now, however, there are so many websites that competition for visitors is high. The best way now to direct traffic to your website is to run profitable Google AdWords keyword campaigns.

 

When preparing a Google AdWords keyword campaign it seems wise to target keywords that receive a high number of monthly searches. This tactic, however, is not always the best choice. Websites that rank high for high-demand keywords are likely more established and have many backlinks. When selecting keywords for your campaign, you must consider existing competition for the keyword and the amount of monthly searches it receives. Even though a keyword may receive only a few hundred or few thousand searches monthly, it could still get your ad shown on the first page of search results.

 

For example, suppose you select a keyword that receives 20,000 monthly searches. But, there are 3 million other websites that also use this keyword. Despite high keyword traffic, your site will still not likely get a first page ranking due to the presence of so much competition. Conversely, suppose you select 5 keywords that receive about 2,000 monthly searches. Each keyword has little competition. If you build your website content around those 5 keywords, you will receive about 10,000 searches of your website monthly. Building your website around 5 to 10 keywords takes work. But the work is far less than trying to build a website around 1 keyword and fight all the competition for that 1 keyword regularly.

Google AdWords offers many free tools to assist with keyword research. The Google Keyword Tool program helps build a master list of keywords based on monthly searches. The Google AdWords Traffic Estimator program also helps estimate the amount of traffic from potential keywords. The Google AdWords Diagnostic program helps with keyword research by showing the ads that come up for a particular keyword search. The Google Website Optimizer tool will monitor different versions of a web page to see which versions receive the most traffic based on different keywords.

 

Commercial keyword tool programs also exist that offer additional assistance. Most paid keyword tool programs help you to find keywords with low competition and high monthly searches. An Internet search for “keyword software” will reveal many different commercial keyword software programs from which to choose. You can also do an Internet search for “keyword software reviews” and receive a list of sites that offer user comments and reviews on different keyword software programs.
